Stories from the vineyard

San Vicente de la Sonsierra, Rioja Alta
"A hidden jewel of Rioja Alta"
Abel Mendoza and his wife Maite Fernández founded their small estate in 1988 in the heart of San Vicente de la Sonsierra, on the border between Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa. What began as a family bulk-wine tradition became, through Abel's obsession and Maite's oenological talent, one of the most admired small domaines in all of Spain. The estate spans 20 hectares divided across 35 individual vineyard blocks — each with its own soil, altitude, and exposure. Tempranillo reigns across 17.5 hectares, with vines averaging 60 years of age, alongside tiny plots of Graciano, Malvasía, Viura, Garnacha Blanca, and Torrontés, each vinified as a separate monovarietal. Farming follows integrated viticulture — chemicals used only in absolute necessity. Abel tends his vines like a gardener, seeking very low yields. The result is a range of wines that each speak with uncanny precision about their corner of the Sonsierra: from the vivid, carbonic-macerated Jarrarte Joven to the meticulous Grano a Grano, crafted berry by berry from the oldest parcels.

How VinoVin came to be
Not Every Business Starts with a Business Plan
Sometimes it starts with curiosity, travel, conversations, and a glass of wine shared with passionate people.
Wine was never a carefully planned business idea. It started as a curiosity.
My wife and I have always enjoyed wine, and over the years we have developed a deep appreciation for the craft behind it. The more we learn, the more fascinating it becomes. Every bottle reflects a unique combination of place, climate, people, and the countless choices that transform grapes into wine.
In 2016, we visited Napa Valley. What was meant to be a holiday became something more. What captivated us was the opportunity to understand wine in its full context: the vineyards, the winemaking decisions, the challenges of each vintage, and the people whose lives revolve around creating it. We spent days learning, asking questions, laughing, and gaining a new appreciation for what goes into every bottle.
That trip sparked a passion that later took us to Champagne, Mendoza, Tuscany, Rioja, Ribera del Duero, and Bordeaux. Wherever we went, we were drawn to small family wineries. Their welcome was warmer, their stories more personal, and their connection to the wine impossible to miss.
Perhaps what intrigued us most was how each vintage reflected a specific year. A hot summer, a rainy harvest, a challenging season, an exceptional one. Behind every bottle lies the intersection of nature and human skill, shaped by a particular place and a particular year that can never be replicated. The wine becomes a record of time and place, carrying a story that is uniquely its own.
During these visits, we often asked the same question:
“Can we find your wines in Norway?”
The answer was almost always the same:
“We would love to be there, but we don't have a distributor.”
Then, last year, we met Catalina Casajús, whose family founded Bodegas Casajús in Ribera del Duero. Having recently returned from business studies abroad, she was passionate about bringing the winery to new markets. Something clicked. What had been a recurring conversation over many years suddenly felt like an opportunity.
One permit led to another, one process led to the next, and slowly what began as an idea became reality.
Today, we are proud to represent Casajús in Norway, alongside another carefully selected family producer that shares the same values we admire: authenticity, craftsmanship, and a strong connection to place.
Looking back, what began as curiosity eventually became a business. But our motivation remains the same: a fascination with the people, places, and stories behind every bottle, and the joy of helping others discover them too.
